Time registration at NWO-I: more insight into who does what |
||||||
On 1 January 2023, employees of the NWO-I office started to register their hours. A large part of the institutes were already doing this. With the exception of NSCR and the employees of the Administrative Unit University Research Groups (BUW), the entire NWO-I organisation now registers its hours using U4ERP. What is the benefit of this? And why do all tenured employees now have to register the hours they have worked? |

Highlight NIOZ: start construction of innovative research vessel RV Anna Weber-van Bosse |

On 16 December 2022, the contract for the construction of the new Dutch ocean-going research vessel, the RV Anna Weber-van Bosse, was signed at NWO Institute NIOZ on Texel. After years of preparations, construction can now begin on this innovative, sustainable and unique vessel that within another two years will replace the 35-year-old RV Pelagia. For instance, the new ship will be prepared to use methanol as fuel and will receive the Arctic Ice Class. That means it will be able to work close to the edge of the sea ice, which is important given the rapid melting of the ice caps due to climate change. The flagship of the Dutch research fleet is named after Anna Weber-van Bosse, the first Dutch female marine biologist to conduct research at sea. |

Highlight ASTRON: construction of the most sensitive radio telescope in the world has commencedASTRON participates in the international partnership |

In December 2022, the construction of the world’s largest and most sensitive radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) started at two locations. ASTRON is the proud partner of the international consortium that initiated this construction. In South Africa, 133 SKA dishes will be added to the 64 of the SKA precursor telescope MeerKAT to form a mid-frequency instrument. In Australia, a low-frequency telescope will be built with 131,072 antennas, each two metres high and in the shape of a Christmas tree. Both radio telescopes have been designed as interferometers, which means that the signals from the telescopes can be combined. ASTRON developed, amongst other things, software to make all the data accessible. With the signals, astronomers hope to obtain answers to crucial questions, such as how stars began to shine after the Big Bang. |
