Highlight Nikhef - FASER detects first neutrinos from proton collisions in ATLAS |
||||||
For the first time, physicists have directly detected neutrinos created by proton collisions in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator at CERN. They did so by means of the FASER detector, a relatively small detector which has been set up in line with the ATLAS detector in the circular LHC accelerator. This FASER detector is in a location - in a service tunnel - where the accelerator tube is not in the way, as is the case with the ATLAS detector. The experiment, in which a number of Nikhef physicists is involved, was built in 2021 by deploying mainly reused equipment from other experiments. |
