NWO Shaping the NWO strategy 2023-2026: opening the windows |
||||||
The current NWO strategy comes to an end next year. An organisation-wide project group is working on shaping the new NWO strategy. This process is now entering the phase of ‘opening the windows’. This means that the project group is eliciting answers from stakeholders within and outside of NWO to questions about important developments and subjects. The project group will incorporate these outcomes in writing the new strategic plan 2023-2026 that the Executive Board wants to approve in the spring of 2022. |

Highlight SRON: relocation from Utrecht to Leiden completed |
||||||
![]() |
The relocation of NWO Institute SRON, Netherlands Institute for Space Research, from Utrecht to the Leiden Bio Science Park has been completed. In October 2019, the first pile for the new building was driven into the ground and, subsequently, twenty intensive months of construction followed. The new building meets the long term needs of SRON: from complex cleanrooms to a massive low-vibration floor plate of 5000 cubic metres of concrete with 800 tonnes of reinforcement. It is hardly surprising that the building has similarities with the building of NWO Institute DIFFER in Eindhoven because architect Ector Hoogstad created both designs. |

On 9 November 2021, the festive keel laying of the new national Wadden Sea and Zeeland Delta research vessel, RV Wim Wolff, took place at N. Dijkstra metal works in Harlingen. The aluminium hull is being built there on behalf of Thecla Bodewes Shipyards, the main contractor. Tradition has it that a coin is welded onto the keel beam ‘for good luck’. Under the watchful eye of the guests, this task was performed by Bram Fey, the future skipper of RV Wim Wolff. It is expected that the ship will be delivered in mid-2023. |

Well-attended theme workshops ‘Recognition and Rewards’ yield a wealth of inspiration |
||||||
NWO-I is actively participating in the national movement ‘Recognition and Rewards (R&R)’. The aim of this movement is to stop assessing researchers solely on the basis of their research results and publications and to also include tasks in the areas of education, impact, leadership and - specifically for the NWO Institutes - the national role. In a series of workshops, the NWO-I-wide committee on Recognition & Rewards discussed the new opinions about and the draft vision for recognition and rewards with colleagues from all institutes. This first workshop on 23 November was about ’impact’ and ‘the national role’. In the following workshops, the themes ‘research’, ‘education’ and ‘leadership’ formed the focus. |

Collective health insurance from OHRA |
||||||
![]() |
Until 1 January 2022, you can make changes to your health insurance or change your health insurer. Therefore, now is the right moment to take a good look at your health insurance. Does it still fit your personal circumstances and health needs? NWO-I has made agreements with OHRA and, as an NWO-I employee, you will receive a discount on the premium for the collective health insurance from OHRA. Experience has taught that this health insurer provides a good service with clear conditions and a sharply priced premium. On the OHRA website, a special page (in Dutch) has been set up for NWO-I where you can find all information about the health insurance and which advantages apply to you. On this page, you can calculate your premium, including the discount, and also take out the health insurance. Handy tip: OHRA offers a transfer service and will cancel your current insurance for you if you take out a new policy with them. |

At NWO-I, the programme Development operations NWO-I is one of the subjects that the NWO-I Foundation Board will decide about this month. In the run-up to this, the works councils are giving their opinion about the proposals for improvement from the perspective of the operations domains.
